Originally founded as Caterpillar Employees Credit Union (CECU), the institution evolved through different names and charters to become what it is today. In recent history, CEFCU transitioned back to an Illinois state credit union charter, maintaining its acronym and federal deposit insurance. The credit union's membership criteria include employees of Caterpillar Inc., its dealers, business partners, as well as individuals living or working in specific counties in Illinois and California. In 2008, CEFCU expanded its operations by acquiring Valley Credit Union based in San Jose, California.
