YMCA of Greater Charleston is a non-profit organization with a mission to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities in the Greater Charleston area by promoting Christian values. Founded in 1866, it operates several locations including the historic Cannon Street YMCA. This facility, established just after the Civil War, serves as a national historic treasure and focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. In 1994, the Berkeley County Family YMCA was opened, aiming to offer affordable programs for families. Recognizing the potential for greater financial stability, the two organizations merged in 2012 under the charter of the Cannon Street YMCA to form the YMCA of Greater Charleston. The organization's recent expansion includes the opening of the Cane Bay Family YMCA on May 1, 2019.
