Whitireia and WelTec have strategically partnered since 2012, providing a wide range of career choices and opportunities for staff, faculty, and students, thereby becoming one of New Zealand's most impressive tertiary institutions. WelTec, the Wellington Institute of Technology, annually trains around 8000 students in industry-led qualifications from trades to degrees and postgraduate programs. Established in 1904, WelTec is one of New Zealand's oldest tertiary education institutions. Whitireia, established in 1986, is a government-owned and funded tertiary institute of technology with a culturally diverse student body. With over 6,200 students, it offers a range of programs at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate, and Master’s levels developed in conjunction with industry, reflecting its NZQA Category 1 institution status. Whitireia is named after the Whitireia maunga (mountain) of Titahi Bay – the mountain that Ngāti Toa identify with, the highest mountain in their rohe.
