Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation (UMEZ) is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1995 with a mission to sustain the economic revitalization of communities in Upper Manhattan. Through strategic investments, job creation, corporate alliances, and small business assistance, UMEZ focuses on strengthening the neighborhoods of Central, West, and East Harlem; Washington Heights; and Inwood. As a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and a part of a national network, UMEZ has leveraged over $1.1 billion of private capital in Upper Manhattan, creating and retaining nearly 10,000 direct jobs.
