South Asian Network (SAN) is a pioneering community-based organization operating in Southern California. Established in 1990, it is dedicated to promoting the health, solidarity, and empowerment of South Asian Americans. With its office in Artesia’s “Little India,” SAN is one of the oldest South Asian American community-based organizations in the nation.
SAN’s impactful work is segmented across three programmatic units. The AWAZ Voices Against Violence unit is committed to the health, safety, and empowerment of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The Community Health Action Initiative (CHAI) ensures access to quality healthcare services, while the Civil Rights Unit focuses on advocacy related to citizenship and civic engagement.
The organization collaborates closely with the community, its board, and staff to craft multilingual, culturally appropriate approaches to community outreach and education, direct service, and policy advocacy. Addressing public health, violence prevention and intervention, hate crime/discrimination, immigration, and civil liberties, SAN has engaged several thousand South Asian Americans in Southern California over the past decade in diverse activities.
The recent $175.00K grant investment from the Weingart Foundation on 01 September 2023 signifies external validation and support for SAN's impactful initiatives. This backing will likely propel the organization towards even greater heights, bolstering its efforts to address pressing issues affecting the South Asian American community in Southern California.
