Save the Chimps, Inc. is a renowned chimpanzee sanctuary founded in 1997 by Dr. Carole Noon and Jon Stryker. The organization gained prominence after a successful legal battle to gain custody of 21 chimpanzees previously used for the U.S. space program. Generous support from the Arcus Foundation, founded by Jon Stryker, enabled the establishment of a permanent sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida. In 2002, with a $3.7 million initiative from the Arcus Foundation, Save the Chimps, Inc. purchased a lab in Alamogordo, New Mexico, rescuing 266 chimpanzees on the verge of bankruptcy due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The organization took swift action to transform the facility into a compassionate and enriching environment, including building new living spaces and establishing social groups. The subsequent relocation of the rescued chimpanzees to Florida marked an unprecedented effort known as “The Great Chimpanzee Migration.” Today, Save the Chimps, Inc. stands as the largest chimpanzee sanctuary globally, continuing its mission to rescue and provide a comfortable, enriched home for chimpanzees in need.
