Riding Sunbeams

Riding Sunbeams is a pioneering startup with a mission to decarbonize rail traction networks by connecting renewable energy directly into electrified rail routes to power the trains. Founded in 2019 by climate charity Possible and Community Energy South, the company has achieved global recognition for its groundbreaking work. In 2019, Riding Sunbeams successfully connected solar energy directly into Direct-Current, third rail powered railways through its FOAK project funded by the Department for Transport. This achievement led to partnerships with major electricity consumers like Network Rail and Transport for London, who have incorporated direct wire solar supply into their traction energy procurement strategies. Riding Sunbeams is also exploring the potential for direct wire solar traction supply in India, indicating the scalability of its innovative approach. The company's commercial model, which utilizes external finance and Power Purchase agreements, minimizes or eliminates capital outlay for transport operators while reducing carbon emissions. Each MW of solar capacity connected to the rail traction system is estimated to deliver annual carbon savings of around 245t/CO2e, demonstrating the significant environmental impact of Riding Sunbeams' initiatives.
