Projeto Instituto Icaro:
Founded in 2000, Instituto Icaro began its activities as a partnership with a public bank, providing tennis classes to 200 children from public schools. When the bank ended the project in 2002, the academy continued serving the children until a group expressed interest in continuing the initiative, leading to the establishment of Instituto Icaro in 2003.
The institute's main goal is to contribute to the dignified development of children and adolescents from low-income families through high-quality sports, cultural, and recreational activities. Children between 6 and 8 years old are eligible, and their participation beyond the fourth grade depends on their involvement in tennis. Afterward, the focus shifts to sports improvement and competition participation.
Children from public schools go through a selection process, along with family interviews and home visits. Casa Lar Dona Vera's sheltered children are also included in the program.
The entity's key objectives are to introduce children to sports, provide academic support alongside sports activities, and develop cultural and recreational programs, including chess and language classes. The project has shown apparent improvements in children's academic performance and has identified some exceptionally skilled participants who have excelled in municipal and state-level sports events.
In 2007, Instituto Icaro formed a performance team comprising 20 athletes with commendable achievements at the state and national levels. Currently, the institute serves 150 children at its headquarters and 330 children in local municipal schools, benefiting a total of 500 children and adolescents, free of charge.
One of the project's significant achievements is the social inclusion through sports and its impact on shaping the future of children and adolescents.
