ProjectQRRestore is a startup dedicated to applying novel science and technology to blue-carbon restoration work in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The initiative aims to address the threats faced by global coral reefs and underwater ecosystems, including oceanic warming, industrial fishing, and offshore runoff. With a focus on the Caribbean, the startup seeks to combat the detrimental effects of the sargasso mass that impedes sunlight and nutrients from reaching the underwater coral, contributing to their demise. This is especially crucial as approximately 500 million people worldwide rely on coastal reefs for sustenance, protection, and livelihoods. Notably, tropical coral reefs have declined by 30-50% since the 1980s, highlighting the urgency of preserving and restoring these vital ecosystems.

ProjectQRRestore's core mission is aligned with U.N. Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Under Water and emphasizes global food security.

The startup's strategy revolves around organizing ocean clean-up and restoration projects in collaboration with the local community in Quintana Roo. In addition to raising awareness about the significance of coral reefs, the organization will develop technological solutions to address the challenges posed by the sargasso continent. Upon obtaining permits from local municipalities, ProjectQRRestore plans to undertake restoration and underwater planting campaigns, partnering with eminent blue-restoration institutes in Quintana Roo, such as the Cozumel Coral Reef Protection Program and Coralium Labs. By leveraging techniques like planting extensive seagrass meadows and reproducing coral modules in-situ and ex-situ, the startup aims to establish buffers against ocean degradation and safeguard Quintana Roo's marine environment.

Furthermore, ProjectQRRestore is structured as a nonprofit organization in alignment with section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
