President Lincoln's Cottage is an historic site and museum located in the Petworth neighborhood in northwest Washington, D.C. It is the residence where Abraham Lincoln drafted the Emancipation Proclamation. The cottage opened to the public in 2008 after an eight-year capital restoration project. In 2016, it became an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of President Lincoln’s Cottage is to reveal the true Lincoln and to continue the fight for freedom. The vision is to plant the seeds of Lincoln’s brave ideas around the world so that all people, everywhere, can be free. The organization aims to transform the cottage into a "Museum of Ideas" rather than a traditional historic house museum, inspiring courageous ideas, respectful dialogue, and thoughtful compromise. The significance of the Cottage lies in the decisions made by Lincoln regarding the Union, Freedom, and the Presidency, notably the Emancipation Proclamation. The organization aims to bring out the leader in every person by showcasing the historical importance of the cottage and its power to inspire courageous ideas. President Lincoln’s Cottage is committed to being the place for brave ideas and fostering dialogue about freedom, justice, and humility. For more information, visit www.lincolncottage.org.
