Description: O Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS) is the entity responsible for coordinating and controlling the operation of electric power generation and transmission facilities in the National Interconnected System (SIN) and for planning the operation of the country's isolated systems, under the supervision and regulation of the Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (Aneel).
Instituted as a legal entity under private law, in the form of a non-profit civil association, ONS was created on August 26, 1998, by Law No. 9,648, with amendments introduced by Law No. 10,848/2004 and regulated by Decree No. 5,081/2004.
ONS is composed of associated members and participating members, including generation, transmission, distribution companies, free consumers, importers, and exporters of energy. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) and representatives of Consumer Councils also participate.
