Owned by Allen Media Broadcasting, KWWL has a rich history, starting as a radio station (KWWL-AM) in 1947 by Ralph J. McElroy before launching KWWL-TV in 1953. The company transitioned to digital television in 2002 and subsequently introduced secondary digital sub-channels three years later. In 2009, KWWL adapted to the digital age by remodeling its facility to begin high-definition news broadcasts, with the first HD newscast in eastern Iowa debuting on April 12, 2010.
