Nc'nean Distillery is a young and independent organic whisky distillery based on the Scottish west coast. The distillery is committed to creating experimental spirits while pioneering sustainable production methods. Located in the remote community of Drimnin above the Sound of Mull, the company is challenging traditional perceptions of Scotch whisky. Notably, Nc'nean has been verified as net zero for scopes one and two, showcasing its dedication to sustainable and imaginative distilling practices. This commitment includes the use of organic barley, a biomass boiler fueled by local woodchip, and the exploration of different yeasts and longer mashing times in the production process. Founded and led by Annabel Thomas, the distillery draws its name, Nc'nean, from 'Neachneohain', the Queen of Spirits in Gaelic legend. Pronounced as Nc-ne-an, the distillery released its first whisky in 2020, with the inaugural bottle fetching a record-breaking £41,000 at auction, with all proceeds donated to charity. Prior to this, the distillery introduced an innovative 'Botanical Spirit: beyond gin'. Notably, the distillery also offers tours, inviting visitors to experience its operations firsthand. With a recent Funding Round investment on 20 February 2022, Nc'nean Distillery secured support from Jeremy Paxman, further fueling its mission to redefine the whisky industry with its sustainable and experimental approach.
