Native BioData Consortium

Native BioData Consortium (NBDC) is a nonprofit organization revolutionizing tribal genomics and data sovereignty to decolonize research. Founded in 2019, NBDC comprises leading researchers and Indigenous members of tribal communities dedicated to enhancing the understanding of Native American genomic issues. The founders, who have Native American heritage or strong ties to Native American research, prioritize the construction of a biobank repository to store Native American genetic data and samples. This initiative aims to advance genetic research for the benefit of Native American participants while upholding their rights and tribal sovereignty.

Having secured a $400.00K grant investment on 20 December 2023, NBDC attracted the support of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, signaling the firm's potential to yield impactful outcomes in the genomics sphere. Based in the United States, NBDC's strategic positioning enables it to centralize efforts in addressing critical gaps in genomic research while being responsive to the needs and ethical frameworks of indigenous communities.
