National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is an autonomous Research and Development Institution of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, established in 1998. Located in Goa, India, NCPOR holds the responsibility for the coordination and implementation of the Indian Antarctic Programme, managing the maintenance of India's permanent station in Antarctica. The center conducts multidisciplinary scientific research, addressing areas of polar science not covered by other Indian institutions. NCPOR has gained recognition as a research center for doctoral research, and supports year-round maintenance of the two Indian research stations in Antarctica, Maitri and Bharati. Dr. Madhavan Nair Rajeevan chairs the Governing Council, with Dr. M. Ravichandran serving as the Director.
The institutional framework of NCPOR involves a Governing Council, representing leadership in polar and ocean sciences, research education, and administration. The Council is chaired by the Secretary of Ministry of Earth Sciences, and the Director holds overall responsibility for the center's administration and in-house R&D activities. Additionally, a Research Advisory Committee, led by Prof. Harsh Gupta, directs and provides focus on research activities, while a Finance Committee oversees financial affairs.
