National Academy of Sciences is a society of distinguished scientists founded in 1863. It provides independent, objective advice to the U.S. on science & technology. It is an honorific society of scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology for the general welfare.
Recognized by President Abraham Lincoln, it was mandated to "investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art" whenever called upon by any government department. In response to the increasing complexity of scientific issues, it expanded to include National Research Council in 1916, National Academy of Engineering in 1964, and National Academy of Medicine in 1970. Collectively, the four organizations are known as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
The institution has played a critical role in providing guidance on scientific and technological matters for over a century and a half. While there is no recent investment data available, the National Academy of Sciences continues to be a prominent and influential organization, contributing to the advancement of science and technology in the United States.
