Meedan is a global technology not-for-profit that builds software and programmatic initiatives to strengthen journalism, digital literacy, and accessibility of information online and off. The organization's primary product is Check, a tool for collaboratively verifying and fact-checking online content. Meedan's Digital Health Lab works on information equity as a public health issue, notably with the successful launch of Health Desk to support fact-checking organizations and journalists reporting on health misinformation about COVID-19. As of October 12, 2021, more than 1.5 million people have visited the Health Desk. Meedan also co-founded the Credibility Coalition, an initiative to develop web standards for third-party credibility indicators, and holds an equity stake in a for-profit entity named Meedan Labs. The last investment, a $2.00M grant, was received on 02 April 2024 from the Skoll Foundation. The company, founded in 2007, is based in the United States. Meedan's work with technologists, newsrooms, fact-checkers, public health professionals, NGOs, and academic institutions is aimed at creating a more equitable internet through open-source tools and initiatives. This approach has led to successful projects in fields ranging from election monitoring to pandemic response and human rights documentation.
