Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike Building Program (MKHKI) was founded in 2000 with a mission to provide youth in the rural community of Hana, East Maui, with a practical and empowering way to learn. The organization has made significant contributions over the past 17 years, including the completion of numerous projects such as 35 cottages for local elders, 18 on-campus facilities, photovoltaic and solar hot water systems, handicap-access improvements, collaborative projects with other nonprofits, establishment of a community farm, and reclamation of cultural landscapes and practices.
With a highly-qualified team of 7 staff, 5 graduate teachers, and 10 apprentices, MKHKI has received several awards over the years, including the Maui Architectural Foundation’s Paepae I Ka Pohaku Award (2017), Humanitarian of the Year Award (2016), and the Hawai`i State Governor’s Innovation Award (2010), among others.
Operating in the education industry, MKHKI has been making a tangible impact on the local community, creating opportunities for hands-on learning and skills development. Despite the absence of specific information on headquarters and recent investments, MKHKI’s track record of community engagement and recognition in the form of prestigious awards positions it as an impactful and sustainable venture worthy of consideration by venture capital firms looking to support innovative educational initiatives.
