LUMKANI is a social enterprise based in South Africa with a mission to mitigate the loss of life and property caused by slum fires, not only in South Africa but across the globe. The company has distributed a networked early warning fire detection system to over 40,000 homes in informal settlements across South Africa, successfully reducing the spread of fires for over four years and limiting fires from spreading beyond the first home in 71% of cases. In 2014, Lumkani partnered with local NGOs, international aid organizations, and corporations to reach high fire risk households.
In 2022, Lumkani took the next step in providing security against fire by partnering with Hollard Insurance, a renowned name in the insurance industry. Through this partnership, they offer household insurance against fire to informal homes. Additionally, the company has agent networks distributing both the fire detection and fire insurance products in some of the highest fire risk areas of South Africa, covering the challenges of shack fires and enabling financial inclusion through innovative IoT technology. The last investment, a Venture Round investment, was secured on 03 June 2022 and the investors involved were Hollard Insurance and Yellowwoods.
