Lithion Technologies is a startup with a mission to sustainably produce strategic materials from lithium-ion batteries. It has developed a robust and cost-effective solution to recover up to 95% of the components of these batteries, facilitating their reuse in new ones. This not only addresses the challenge of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries but also creates a secondary source of strategic materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt. The company's pilot plant was constructed in 2019 and it is currently building its first commercial critical minerals extraction plant near Montreal, Canada. Lithion Technologies' processes significantly reduce the ecological impact of lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles, contributing to a more sustainable energy transition.
