La Plata County Humane Society

La Plata County Humane Society, established in 1971, operates as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter with the mission to provide shelter for homeless animals, rescue animals in distress, and promote kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The organization also runs a Thrift Store established in 1990 to raise funds for homeless animals, selling gently-used goods donated by the community. It supports other local non-profits by donating clothing, toiletries, and vouchers. With a board of nine elected members, a veterinarian was added to the staff in 2000 to ensure all animals receive proper care, including health checks, vaccinations, and microchipping, before being adopted into forever homes. La Plata County Humane Society's slogan, "Help Us, Help Them, One Paw at a Time," reflects its commitment to animal welfare and community support.
