Kootenai Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric utility based in Rathdrum, Idaho. With a mission to provide exceptional service and reliable electric power at competitive rates, KEC serves more than 30,000 meters and approximately 2,300 miles of electric line across Kootenai, Benewah, Bonner, and Spokane counties. Governed by an independent seven-member elected Board of Directors, KEC, founded in 1938, stands as the largest electric cooperative in Idaho with a workforce of over 100 individuals.
KEC primarily sources its electricity from the Bonneville Power Administration and operates as a private, nonprofit electric utility, selling power at cost to its members. The company's historical significance lies in its roots as one of the pioneering electric cooperatives that emerged in response to the lack of rural electricity in the early 1930s. Since supplying power to 385 members in 1939, KEC has followed the Cooperative Way, steadily expanding its footprint and providing power to member-owners in the region.
