Independent Development Trust

Independent Development Trust (IDT) is a Schedule 2 state-owned entity, based in South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, and with regional offices in all nine provinces. Initially established in 1990 as an independent grant-making trust, the organization received a R2-billion grant from the government. Over the years, it has supported approximately 8800 community upliftment projects focusing on education, housing, health services, and business development in underserved Black communities. In 1999, it was reconfigured and listed as a Schedule 2 program implementation agency as prescribed by the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) (Act 1 of 1999). The organization is mandated to manage and implement social infrastructure and social development programs for the government, with a focus on rural communities. Their portfolio includes facilities for social, basic, and community services, as well as initiatives for job creation, poverty eradication, community enterprise support, and empowerment. IDT plays a crucial role in enabling the government to deliver essential services to its citizens, spanning national, provincial, and local levels.
