Hellenic Army

Hellenic Army is the land force of Greece, formed in 1828, and is a critical component of the Hellenic Armed Forces. It is the largest branch among the army, air force, and navy, and plays a vital role in safeguarding national territory and contributing to international security and peace. With its robust structure, the Hellenic Army is the main contributor to the Balkan Battle Group, a rapid-response force under the EU Battlegroup structure. The army is headed by the chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS), under the command of Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS).

The motto of the Hellenic Army is "Freedom Stems from Valour" and its emblem, the two-headed eagle with a Greek Cross escutcheon, symbolizes the links between modern Greece, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Byzantine Empire. In addition to its defensive and peacekeeping roles, the Hellenic Army contributes to providing social aid and supports state services during emergency situations.
