Harlem United is a healthcare organization with a mission to advance health equality, having been founded in 1988. It started in a church basement, providing support for individuals suffering from AIDS when there was significant stigma surrounding the disease. Over the years, the company evolved to offer world-class HIV care and expanded its services to cover a range of healthcare needs. With a focus on Health Services, Housing, Harm Reduction, and Supportive Services, Harlem United delivers medical, behavioral, and dental care, housing models, infectious disease prevention, substance use services, and intensive case management. Annually, they provide housing for over 600 formerly homeless individuals, conduct around 21,000 medical visits, and supply more than 18,000 hot meals and pantry supplies. Despite facing resistance from established providers, Harlem United continues to serve medically underserved communities, particularly people of color in Harlem, who face social and institutional barriers. It is a lifeline for those living with HIV/AIDS who are homeless and/or dealing with mental illness, substance use, or social stigma related to their sexuality, gender, or HIV status.
