Happy Dirt is a Durham, North Carolina based organic produce grower and distribution company originally established in 2004 as Eastern Carolina Organics. Founded by Sandi Kronick with a grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund, the company aimed to support the state’s tobacco farmers in transitioning to organic produce production. Over the years, Happy Dirt has facilitated a significant increase in organic production for individual farmers, with over 400 acres now under cultivation, amounting to more than $40 million in payments to farmers. The company, presently owned by 16 farmers and 2 staff members, collaborates with 100 farms across the United States, functioning as a crucial link in the food system while bolstering the regional food system. Happy Dirt demonstrates its commitment to farmers by redistributing 80% of its sales back to the growers, ensuring customers receive fresh organic produce while also supporting farmers in preserving their family land.
