Habitat for Humanity GTA
Habitat for Humanity GTA, founded in 1988, is a nonprofit housing organization with the slogan "Building strength, stability, and independence by unlocking the benefits of owning a home." The organization's mission revolves around mobilizing communities to help working, lower-income families achieve strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership.
With a focus on the Greater Toronto Area, Habitat for Humanity GTA has built more than 360 homes for families, including over 1,300 children, in need of safe, decent, and affordable housing. These houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages tailored to the family’s income level.
In addition to homebuilding, Habitat for Humanity GTA operates 11 Habitat ReStore locations across the GTA, selling new and used donated home furnishings, appliances, and renovation materials at a fraction of the original price. The proceeds from sales help cover the cost of building homes for families, creating a sustainable funding model for the organization.
Overall, Habitat for Humanity GTA serves as a cornerstone in addressing housing challenges for lower-income families, providing a hand up through its unique affordable homeownership model while also contributing to the community through its retail operations.
