Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) is the leading representative body for companies involved in the distribution of new passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles in Australia. With 68 brands offering 380 models, and supported by almost 4000 dealers, the Australian automotive sector is a significant contributor to the economy and employment. Since the cessation of local vehicle production in 2017, all vehicles sold in Australia are now imported. Despite this, some brands maintain design and engineering facilities in Victoria, supporting global model development. Additionally, Australian expertise continues to serve as a source of components for manufacturers in Japan and North America, including aluminium castings and alloy wheels. The automotive sector in Australia encompasses various activities, including importation, distribution, retailing, servicing, logistics, transport, and engineering, supported by numerous supplier companies employing thousands of Australians. The sector is a major employer, with more than 75,000 staff employed by new vehicle distributors and Australian new car dealers. Training for vital service and repair functions is often provided by TAFE and other colleges, with automotive brands themselves offering specialist training for technicians, many of whom may diversify into other industries, leveraging their honed skills. The FCAI’s advocacy and representation play a critical role in promoting the interests of the Australian auto industry on a national and global scale.
