DoD Marrow Donor Program / Salute to Life is a nonprofit organization devoted to facilitating bone marrow and stem cell donations among members of the United States Department of Defense. Established by Public Law 101-302 in 1991, the program focuses on HLA research, donor recruitment, typing, and management, catering to active-duty U.S. military personnel, their dependents, DoD civilian employees, reservists, Coast Guard and National Guard members, retired military personnel, and civilians associated with the DoD. Through its efforts, the program has successfully enrolled over 800,000 individuals into the national registry. However, despite this achievement, the challenge lies in finding suitable matches due to the rarity of HLA combinations. The organization strives to improve transplantation science and connect qualified donors with patients in need. The program's vital mission not only benefits the armed forces community but also offers hope to patients with diseases treatable through transplantation.
