Current is a leading water innovation hub based in Chicago. Established in 2016, its mission is to drive water innovation and address critical water challenges caused by climate change and pollution. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Current up to $160 million over 10 years in January 2024 to establish, develop, and grow the Great Lakes Water Innovation Engine, known as Great Lakes ReNEW. This six-state coalition aims to transform waste into wealth in the Great Lakes Region by commercializing new technologies. Current collaborates with various entities including corporations, universities, nonprofits, utilities, and governments to create inclusive, circular blue economy solutions. The focus areas include Use-Inspired R&D, Workforce Development, and Translating Innovations to Practice. The dedication to supporting communities and people affected by economic and environmental injustice positions Current as a notable player in the #water #innovation space.
