Annapolis is a municipal corporation of the State of Maryland with a history dating back to 1649. The city, which has home rule powers since 1954, served as the capital of the United States in 1783-1784. Situated at the mouth of the Severn River on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is home to St. John's College since 1696 and the United States Naval Academy since 1845. The city covers approximately eight square miles and had a population of approximately 40,000 in 2020.
