Founded in 1853 by Christian Moerlein in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, the company aimed to produce high-quality beers reminiscent of those from Moerlein's native Germany. With a focus on superior craftsmanship, the brewery quickly became the largest in Ohio. Despite facing challenges during Prohibition, the Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. retained its legendary status within the Ohio Valley Region.

Resurrected in 1981 as a purveyor of "better beer," Christian Moerlein has been at the forefront of the craft beer movement, with its Select Lager being the first American beer to pass the rigorous Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, also known as Reinheitsgebot.

Today, Christian Moerlein continues its legacy in Cincinnati's historic Kaufman Brewery, just blocks away from its original location in Over-the-Rhine. The brewery offers tours of its production facility and historic underground tunnels. Additionally, the brewery taproom, situated in the pre-Prohibition malting room, operates on a weekly basis, from Friday to Sunday.
