Center for Practical Bioethics

The Center for Practical Bioethics has been providing guidance at the crossroads of decision since 1984. As a nonprofit, free-standing, and independent organization, it has gained national recognition for its work in helping patients, families, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and corporate leaders grapple with ethically complex issues in medicine and research. The organization's mission, to raise and respond to ethical issues in health and healthcare, requires proactive measures, such as calling attention to ethical issues, developing programs, policies, and publications, and achieving common ground. The results are reasoned, real-world responses to ethically complex situations, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes and peace of mind. The Center's work is led by staff representing multiple disciplines and a variety of expertise, supported by a committed Board of Directors. The focus areas for 2021 include ethics education & consultation, advance care planning & serious illness, and emerging issues and systems change, such as population health & deliberative democracy, artificial intelligence, and PAINS-KC. The organization's services encompass a range of activities, including bioethics education for clinicians and students, ethics consultation services, guidance in response to calls from individuals to policy leaders, leading the KC Regional Ethics Committee Consortium, presenting community lectures and symposia, and publishing and archiving a Bioethics Library of 4,000 items, which receives 750,000 pageviews/year. The Center is also making a significant impact by helping thousands each year to prepare for the uncertainties of advancing illness and make their end-of-life wishes known through advance care planning. Additionally, the organization is building coalitions and training providers across Missouri and Kansas in the adoption of a form that translates patient goals of care into physician orders that follow the patient.
