Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, independent, community organization that focuses on the promotion, preservation, restoration, enhancement, and maintenance of Olmsted Parks and Parkways in the greater Buffalo area. It is renowned for managing and operating an entire historic urban park system consisting of 850 acres of parks, parkways, and circles designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the first landscape architect in the USA. The parks, including Cazenovia Park, Delaware Park, Front Park, Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Riverside Park, and South Park, are enjoyed by over 1 million people annually for recreation and relaxation. Since the 2004 agreement with the City of Buffalo and Erie County, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy has assumed full responsibility for the management and maintenance of these green spaces. This includes year-round park maintenance, including turf care, litter pickup, trash removal, graffiti clean-up, tree and flower planting, and pruning. The organization has adopted the ‘Plan for the 21st Century’ and published a Five Year Plan update for 2020-2024 to restore the parks to Olmsted’s original vision and complete the system as initially conceived. As the first nonprofit to manage and operate an entire historic urban park system, this unique position presents a significant opportunity for investment in sustainable, community-focused projects that align with the organization's goals. With a strong legacy since its founding in 1978, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy continues to be a key player in preserving historic park systems for future generations.
