Australian Institute of International Affairs

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is a leading organization dedicated to fostering interest in and understanding of international affairs in Australia. Recognized as Australia’s “Best Independent Think Tank” and ranked as the top think tank in Australia by the University of Pennsylvania Global Go-To Think Tank Index, the AIIA provides a platform for discourse without aiming to establish its own institutional opinions.

Established in 1924 and originally affiliated with the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), the AIIA has evolved into the sole nationwide organization of its kind in Australia. Its activities, which include organizing nearly 200 annual events such as lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences, are funded through member contributions, a modest government subsidy, and tax-deductible donations from individuals and businesses. The institute’s independent branches are spread across seven Australian States and Territories, with a National Office in Canberra, and it maintains strong connections with Chatham House and similar organizations globally.

The AIIA plays a pivotal role as a facilitator for the presentation and discussion of diverse perspectives on international affairs, as mandated by its constitution, prohibiting the expression of its own views.
