Army Emergency Relief is a nonprofit financial assistance organization established in 1942 by Secretary of War Henry Stimson and Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Marshall. It provides zero-interest loans and grants to assist Soldiers and their Families with immediate financial needs such as vehicle repairs, rent, utilities, and emergency travel. Additionally, it offers emergency funds to surviving dependents, grants for special-needs medical equipment, and scholarships to spouses and children of active and retired Soldiers.
Having supported over 4 million Soldiers and Family members with more than $2 billion since its inception, Army Emergency Relief boasts an impressive record. With ninety cents of every donated dollar going directly to Soldiers, it exhibits one of the highest rates of return of any nonprofit in the United States.
