ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes

ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes is a pioneering organization dedicated to mitigating Australia’s vulnerability to climate extremes. Established in 2017, the center aligns its operations with its slogan "We reduce Australia’s economic, social and environmental vulnerability to climate extremes." The center's strategy encompasses several key components such as advancing fundamental climate science, enhancing extreme weather and climate event predictions, fostering collaborative efforts among five of Australia’s prominent universities and partner organizations, training and investing in future climate science leaders, and disseminating knowledge to governments, policymakers, and the wider community. The impact of climate extremes spans across diverse sectors including health, soil and water, agriculture, infrastructure, energy security, and financial stability. This necessitates targeted research in crucial areas such as weather and climate interactions, attribution and risk, drought, and ocean extremes, all supported by advancements in climate modeling. The center's initiatives are substantially supported by the Australian Research Council and its five partner universities - the University of New South Wales, Monash University, the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Tasmania.
