AMOSC: Transforming Oil Spill Response in Australia
AMOSC, also known as the Australian Marine Oil Spill Centre, was established in 1991 with a noble mission to ensure rapid response and safeguard the Australian coastline in case of oil spills. The center, located in Geelong, Victoria, is a testament to the commitment of the Australian oil industry. It is financially supported by ten participating oil companies and various subscriber companies, which collectively manage the majority of oil and gas production, offshore operations, and tanker movements along the Australian coast.
AMOSC operates as Australia's primary resource for oil spill response equipment, strategically positioned in Geelong to facilitate swift responses across the Australian coast. Moreover, the establishment of an office in Fremantle further underscores the commitment to supporting the members based in Western Australia.
One of the key initiatives of AMOSC is its comprehensive training program, equipping industry personnel with theoretical, planning, and practical knowledge in oil spill response management. The training, accredited by the Nautical Institute, adheres to the IMO I, II & III doctrine, ensuring high standards of preparedness and response. Additionally, AMOSC spearheads the AMOSPlan, a voluntary mutual aid arrangement among oil companies, internationally recognized for its capabilities by IPIECA, to ensure the optimal allocation of resources during oil spill responses.
With its focus on Education and Oil and Gas industries, AMOSC continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing the preparedness and response strategies for the Australian oil and gas sector, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and maritime safety.
