Afognak Native Corporation (Afognak) was founded in 1973 through the merger of Port Lions Native Corporation and Natives of Afognak, Inc., in line with the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA). With over 1,200 shareholders, Afognak is dedicated to meeting their economic, social, and cultural needs, particularly those living in Port Lions and Kodiak Island.
Headquartered in Kodiak, Alaska, with offices across the United States and international locations, Afognak is managed by a nine-member Board of Directors, all of whom are Alaska Native shareholders. The Board created Alutiiq, LLC and its subsidiaries to hone core competencies in commercial and U.S. government contracting industries.
Afognak's wholly owned subsidiary, Alutiiq, LLC, is named after the Alutiiq people of the Kodiak Archipelago. The company holds 248,000 acres of land in the Kodiak Archipelago, primarily on Afognak Island, serving as its most valuable asset.
